“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the Hour will not come until…a man speaks to his whip or his shoe, and his thigh will tell him about what happened to his family after he left.”

“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the Hour will not come until…a man speaks to his whip or his shoe, and his thigh will tell him about what happened to his family after he left.” [Sunan al Tirmidhi]

It is narrated that Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said (meaning):
“By Him in Whose hand is my soul, the Hour will not come until…a man speaks to his whip or his shoe, and his thigh will tell him about what happened to his family after he left.” [Sunan al Tirmidhi]

This has led some people to postulate that this Hadith refers to cell-phones, because cell-phones are placed in a man’s pockets next to his thigh. People have further guessed that the “whips” were an attempt to describe wires (wired headset).

Why was the word whip used and not the word 'aerial' by Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)? Simply because he had to describe it to his companions in a way that they understood best.

Besides this, the arabic language is a descriptive language, where a word is derived from a description that it matches (see our QuranGEMS blog to understand this better). Since the whip describes an aerial the best, this is actually a good description.
